Nations and States

In the Second Epoch, approximately between the years 3000 BCB and 2000 BCB, the first nation states began to arise on Tear. These included the Odomsh Empire in Ayodesh, the state of Chomira in Jumira, the Miganjan and Golbst-Lanijan Empires in Golanicja, and the Torzu and Bolstu Empires in Tulosz. With the arrival of the Ash Winter that ended the Second Epoch, all of these emerging empires collapsed, and unfied nation states would not arise again on Tear for almost 2500 years.

In response to the orcish conquests, which began in 327, new nation states began to form. In most cases these emerging nation states adopted species-centric ideologies. The Kingdom of Golanicja was a dwarven kingdom, and the Kingdom of Tulosz was a human kingdom. The Empires of Senecia and Inik were elven and lizari, respectively. Obersch became an ursan Queendom, and Kasdush became a spriggan empire. With the end of the orcish conquests, these nation states would war with one another for the first eight centuries of the Fourth Epoch, and the species-centric ideologies that formed them would end up being their undoing.

As most of the imperial states of the early Fourth Epoch disintegrated, some them disappeared while others fragmented into new, smaller nation states. At the same time, as central governance over entire regions collapsed, many individual cities reconstituted themselves as autonomous city states. Some few of these autonomous regions were closely enough allied that they reformed into new nation states.

By the year 1423, the world of Tear is made up of 33 political regions, some of which are not geographically contiguous. Of the 33 regions, 17 of these are unified nation states while the remainder are loosely confederated or non-confederated groups of autonomous city states and their supporting regions.
